Research Abstract |
深海底熱水孔環境は、地球の内部エネルギーにより支えられた特殊かつ大規模な生物圏である。本研究では深海底熱水環境、陸上温泉、海底下をはじめとする極限環境に生息する微生物資源の分離・生態研究・応用開発を目的としている。 2004年度は、米国Portland State UniversityのAnna-Louise Reysenbach教授の研究室に赴き、イエローストーン国立公園より分離した新規Sulfurihydrogenibiumの生埋・生態学的性状を解析した。解析の結果、1)本分離株はSulfurihydrogenibium属の中でも過去に分離例の無いグループに属する、2)エネルギー源を硫黄化合物に依存し、水素を用いる事ができない、3)炭素源として様々な有機物を利用する、といった特性を有している事を突き止めた。 また、東太平洋Juan de Fucaにおいて行われたIntegrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)の航海(Leg.301)に乗船した。本研究航海は、海洋地殻内の微生物活動と流体循環系の関連に対する、世界初の直接的アプローチである。本航海において海底下から約200mのコアを複数採取し、微生物群集の生存量や活性、活動量、多様性等を解析した。既に様々な新規微生物の存在を確認し、そのうちいくつかは分離培養および生理生態学的性状の決定にも成功している。これらの結果を総合し、海底下の微生物活動、流体循環および流体化学組成変化との相関を検討している。 以上の結果の一部はPartnerships for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy Fifth Biennial Conference、International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology誌等で報告している。
