Research Abstract |
Seven Japanese and one Nepalese botanists have made a botanical survey in the Jaljale Himal, a mountain ridge between Arun and Tamur rivers, east Nepal. The Jaljale Himal is famous among botanists for the presence of curious alpine plants as 'green-house plants', e. g., Rheum nobile, and 'sweater plants', e. g., Saussurea obvallata. The present research involved the following items : 1) photosynthesis of 'green-house' and 'sweater' plants ; 2) cytology of 'green-house' and 'sweater' plants ; 3) ecology of 'green-house' and 'sweater' plants ; 4) morphology of 'green-house' and 'sweater' plants 5) vegetation of the alpine zone of the Jaljale Himal ; 6) flora of the Jaljale Himal. During our stay in the alpine zone we have made several experiments using numerous electrical laboratory equipments. In addition to the ecological research approxim. 2500 numbers of specimens from the alpine zone were collected. Representative green-house plants, Rheum nobile and Saussurea obvallata, are relatively common in the Jaljale Himal, though they are rather rare in other regions in Nepal. The data obtained from various experiments and field observations have been analyzed, and some of the results have been already published in 14 articles in technical journals and others. gThe Alpine Flora and Vegetation of Jaljale Himal h, which is the first regional flora of the alpine Himalaya, was issued. Furthermore the other eight articles are now preparing for publication in technical journals.
