Environmental issues are one of the most important problems in asian big cities. Well developed but too much sophisticated technologies employed in developed countries are not very helpful for developing countries, because of their high costs and of complicated operations. The ultimate purpose of the present work is to develop the "intermediate technologies" based upon international cooperation between Japan and counterpart countries.
As a first step, preliminary discussions with Thailand and Philippino researchers and governmental policy makers as well, were done in the first half of the year. Three groups, whose concerns are, (1) Exhaust gas treatments, (2) Waste water treatments, and (3) Air monitoring & modeling of pollutant diffusion, are organized based on the discussions.
On November, two workshops on "Environmental Protection Technologies in Asian Big Cities" were held, one in Manila and the other in Bangkok. More than 50 researchers participate in each workshop, and made very frank and constructive discussions.
Followings are the summary of experimental results and discussions.
1. Automobile catalysts for these countries should put more emphasis on oxidation activities. Gold supported on cobalt oxide shows extremely high catalytic activity in oxidation, and hence, is more suitable than currently used Three Way Catalysts.
2. Active carbon can be produced from sugar cane which might be useful for waste water treatments in sugar industry.
3. A model for diffusion of pollutants were developed. It is simple enough to be applied in these countries.
4. Solid waste management is also a very important problem to be cooperated.
The seminar/workshop on the subject is very timely arid should be organized in an appropriate time interval.
