Research Abstract |
This international scholarly project carried out for a present survey of the Silk Road route and the sites along it in the Xinjiang uighur autonomous region from the third year of Heisei to its fifth year. Since the second year of Heisei, every investigation and excavation of cultural relics must take the permission of the State Bureau of Cultural Relics beyond the Lows of State Bureau of Cultural Relics. Thanks to the permission of State Bureau of Cultural Relics through Xinjiang uigur Autonomous Region Cultural Bureau and the co-operation of The Cultural Relics Archeology Institution of Xinjiang and The Desert Institute of Xinjiang, we were able to attain our joint project. In the third year of Heisei, we rounded the Tarim basin and investigated the ancient Silk Road and its sites. In consequence of tying the points and draw a line between the ancient sites in Tarim basin, we made it clear that the ancient Silk Road was much different from the modern car-route. f Heisei, we took a tour around in the Zungaria of Xinjiang, i.e. Tianshan bei lu and the two sides of renge of eastern Tianshan. As the result, we made clear that the water and the grassland are very abundant in so called Tian shan bei lu (northern route of Tian shan), so it is easier for a caravan to make a journey along this route than along the Tarim basin route. In the fifth fiscal year of Heisei, we explored some regions of the Tarim basin which we have not done yet, i.e. Kucha, Aksu, Ushu, Tashkurgan, Kashgar, Yarkand, Kyotan, Pamir plateau and so. Especially speaking, we succeed to explore the route from Uchi-Turfan to Bedal pass, along which Xuan-zang-sang-zang went in the Tang era and the route from Pamir Plateau to Mintaka pass along which the Otani Expedition passed. Then we took the measurement of the longitude and latitude of about 100 sites in Xinjiang by G.P.S. (Global Positioning System) of Sony Co. The results of our measurements corrected a number of longitude and latitude in the Sir A. Stein's map which so far was regarded as credible. Now we got the possibility to give the whole picture of the ancient Silk Road through linking these sites each other. Less
