1. Parmaceutical science is an applied and unified science which is grounded on the basic sciences such as chemistry, biology, physics and many others. Therefore, since it must be cover a interdisciplinary field of sciences, the selection of technical terms necessary for pharmaceutical sciences from a wide filds is very elaborate work. For this reason, proposed terms were divided into 8 subfields such as (〕SY.encircled1.〔) hygienic chemistry, public health, cosmetic chemistry, drug metabolism, toxicology and microbiology, (〕SY.encircled2.〔) pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and clinical medicine related to medical drugs, (〕SY.encircled3.〔) pharmaceutical laws, (〕SY.encircled4.〔) quality control and management of medical drugs, (〕SY.encircled5.〔) pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical production and clinical pharmacy, (〕SY.encircled6.〔) pharmacognosy, chemistry of natural products, pharmaseutical chemistry, medicinal chemistry and physical chemistry, (〕SY.encircled7.〔) analytical chemistry and
pharmaceutical analytical chemistry, (〕SY.encircled8.〔) pharmacopeia and related fields. The committee on this investigation is composed of a chairman, general organizers, field-organizers and term-checkers.
2. At first year, the fundamental policy of this work wa decided in the committee, and then basic data of terms were collected. At second year, the evaluation of the terms collected were scored on the basis of importance and frequency of usage. The committee held the symposium on pharmaceutical terminology in the annual meeting of Pharmaceutical Society of Japan(PSJ) and discussed the process of this activity to obtain the consensus of the member of PSJ.
3. In order to assure the uniformity of the terminology between these results and the terms of other scientific fields, the committee performed the re-invest-igation of the results and standardization of these terms according to helpful a dvices of Mr.Kunio Aoto(Japanese Science Information Center).
4. As the results of the activity described above, about 8,000 terms were finally established as the Japanese Scientific Terms on Pharmaceutical Sciences.
