Torque performance of a disk enclosed in a housing was studied both theoretically and experimentally when a viscous non-magnetic and magnetic fluids, respectively, was introduced into the space between the disk and housing Following results were obtained :
(1) Non-magnetic fluid enclosed :
When a radially slitted disk rotates in a viscous fluid, the fluid flows along the slits and cause an increase in the transmitted torque due to the enhancement of the angular momentum exchange between the disk and housing at a higher Reynolds number irrespective of the decrease in the tangential contact area of the disk.
(2) Magnetic fluid enclosed :
The torque performance of different types of converter was examined when a magnetic fluid is partially introduced into the space and the strength of the magnetic field was changed by the electric current through a coil.
A. Vertical axis converter : The amount of the transferred torque by viscous stress was proved to be controlled by the change of the strength in magnetic field because the volume th the fluid between the disk and housing could be changed by the magnetic field. Slits in the rotating disk were found to increase the transferred torque and improve the switching performance.
B.Horizontal axis converter : The range of the controllable torque was found to be decreased because of the lack in the storage space of the magnetic fluid. At high rotational speed of the disk the fluid could not be sustained in the space due to the increase in the centrifugal force exerted on the fluid.
