Research Abstract |
New neurotoxic principles originated from terrestrials in Madagascar were examined by field research and by chemical analysis in 1992-1994. The area investigated were principally tropical rain forest and central high land where such animals would be distributed. Collected venomous animals were as follows : frogs (Mantella 8 sp., Scaphyophryne 1 sp., Discoglossid 1 sp., unknown 3 sp.) ; Spiders (Nephyla 1 sp., Nephylengis 2 sp., Coerostris 2 sp., unknown 5 sp.) ; Scorpions (unknown 5 sp.) ; Wasps (Polistes 1 sp., Delta 3 sp., unknown 5 sp.) ; Termite (unknown 1 sp.) . Unknown species are under identification of their proper names at the National Museum of Sciences. Characterization of neurotoxins : The skin of Mantella sp.contained more than 100 kinds of new alkaloid possessing indolizidine or quinolizidine skelton which were determined respectively by GC/FTIR,NMR and mass spectrometry. The venom of Araneid spiders including genera Nephyla and Nephyleng is were analyzed by capillary HPLC connected with Tandem Mass Spectrometer and over 60 kinds of new polyamine toxin were characterized. From the venom of Coerostris spider, we found a novel conjugated toxin with amino acids and polyamine which blocked post synaptoc neural transmission. Other toxic principles isolaterd from wasps and scorpions, the chemical characterization is now in progress
