Research Abstract

As the results of this case study, we have developed another low-cost new landfill type which improves each function of the semi-aerobic landfill type. This is the so-called "Recirculatory Semi-aerobic Landfill Type" which is equipped with a leachate recirculation system. Main functions of this type are ;
(1)To decrease the amount of leachate
(2)To enhance the decomposition of waste
(3)To improve the leachate quality
This type of landfill serves to enhance the decomposition of waste and to improve the leachate quality through the introduction of air into the landfill site by means of leachate recirculation.
Results of the field experiments for the recirculatory semi-aerobic landfill type in Malaysia show that initial COD_<Mn> concentrations of 5,200 mg/l decreased to 845 mg/l and NH^+_N of 1,440 mg/l decreased to 550 mg/l.
From these results, it is shown that the recirculatory semi-aerobic landfill type improves leachate quality in practical use. Fig.1 shows a low cost system using the first Recirculatory Semi-aerobic Landfill type in Malaysia designed by the author. Based on the analysis of leachate quality from the landfill site, it was shown that this system performed well in Malaysia. Recently, the Malaysian Government has been using this system with a simple leachate physical treatment in the design of landfills based on our concept of "Landfill Type".
