Tohoku University artificial heart group proposed a new drive mechanism for a total artificial heart (TAH) which produces the vibrating flow in the high frequency area between 3 to 50 Hz. This vibrating flow pump (VFP) has been developing as a totally implantable TAH system because of following advantageous characteristics.
a.simple in drive mechanism and pump structure
b.high frequency generation (miniaturized TAH,possibility to have control method of blood distribution by changing the drive frequencies.
c.a single valve
d.one way flow stream
high efficient transcutaneous electric power transmission system
The values of plasma Hb after pumping of the VFP showed the almost same value as a commercially available centrifugal and roller pumps which was thought to be an acceptable value as clinical use in the ex vivo hemolysis tests.
Pump description and design improvement
The VFP consists of mainly an inlet and outlet cannulae, a vibrational tube with surrounded electric coils and an outflow valve. The improvement of the pump design was achieved from the information by the use of the flow visualization and hemolysis study.
Transcutaneous energy transmission system (TETS)
TETS is developed by the use of a primary and a secondary amorphous coils across the skin in the distance between 2,4 and 6mm showing 16,15, and 13% as the values of the total efficiencies of the drive system, respectively.
Adult goats were used for pump fitting studies, acute hemodynamic, hemolysis evaluations and subchronic studies using VFPs as totally implantable TAH.In the details, see following papers.
