For the comparison of the component sugars of the cell wall polysaccharide, the extracts were prepared from the whole cells of the eleven species of genus Eubacterium by the using of hot formamide.
The component sugars of their extracts were analyzed by gas liquid chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. The extracts from E.aerofaciens, E.lentum, and E.alactolyticum were composed predominantly of the four sugars ; rhamnose, glucose, galactose, and glucosamine, E.yurii and E.limosum were consisted of the same component sugars except the presence of galactosamine and the absence of galactose. Although E.rectale contained glucose, galactose, and glucosamine, but, characteristically devoid of rhamnose and galactosamine. E.timidum, E.brachy, and nodatum contained glucosamine and did not contain rhamnose. Besides E.brachy and E.nodatum were composed of glycerol respectively. Eubacterium sp. strain S-1 and J-92 were composed of rhamnose, glucosamine, and galactosamine in common. The extracts of three strains of E.saburreum were composed of rhamnose, glucosamine, galactosamine, galacto-heptose, and manno-heptose.
It was suggested that according to sugar analysis of the formamide extracts, the eleven species of genus Eubacterium were roughly classified into six groups, and E.saburreum was the sole species containing galacto-heptose and manno-heptose in oral Eubacterium.
