Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to investigate perception of the mandibular position in aged. By using a device that defines horizontal mandibular position, antero-posterior perceptive ability was evaluated. The study was performed on elderly edentulous subjects and on adult dentulous subjects. 1. For elderly edentulous subjects, the perceptive ability with a reference position defined as the apex of the gothic arch resulted in a reference position average of 64.0(〕SY.+-.〔)38.3%. The lowest value was found at a position 0.2mm anterior to apex with its value showing 20.0(〕SY.+-.〔)36.7%. The value was found to increase as the position shifted towards the front, with 53.3(〕SY.+-.〔)41.1% and 1.2mm anterior to the reference position. When the reference position was 0.6mm anterior to the apex, the result of the reference position was 61.3(〕SY.+-.〔)37.1%. The perceptive ability was found to increase as the position shifted toward the front, with the value ranging between 36 to 44%, showing 23% higher on average in comparison with a posterior position. 2. For adult dentulous subjects, the perceptive ability with a reference position defined as the apex of the gothic arch resulted in a reference position average of 60.0(〕SY.+-.〔)25.1%. The lowest value was found at a position 0.2mm anterior to the apex with its value showing 47.3(〕SY.+-.〔)21.0%. The perceptive ability was found to increase as the position shifted towards the back, with the value ranging in between 53 to 91%, showing 20% higher on average in comparison with an anterior position. 3. The stimulus limen was 0.12mm in dentulous subjects, and 1.11mm in edentulous subjects. Horizontal positioning senses and perceptions of the mandible decrease with effect of aging.
