Research Abstract

The aim of this research project was to produce the fully annotated Japanese translation of the Firth chapter of Dignaga's Pramanasamuccayavrtti (=PSV). In order to pursue the above aim, we got together regularly to read and translate the PSV and its only available Indian commentary Tika (=PST) of Jinendrabuddhi.
As the result of our research we came to the following methodological awareness. As far as PSV is concerned, we can follow the same method of understanding by means of reconstructing the possible original Sanskrit text from the fragments and the two rather unreliable Tibetan translations.Mr.Waso, one of our collaborators, has already finished reconstructing the whole PSV basing upon Muni Jambuvijaja's pioneering attempts. He and Katsura have more or less finished translating the whole text into Japanese, which will be published in the future.
As far as PST is concerned, we discovered the above methodology did not work very well.In this case we must apply the methodology proposed by E.Steinkellner some years ago with regard to the Buddhist pramana texts whose Sanskrit originals have been lost.
