Research Abstract |
Our project studied prevalence of HTLV-I/II-associated diseases in Jamaica, Colombia and Bolivia. A patient with HTLV-I-associated infective dermatitis was found in Jamaican black children. Both ATL and HAM/TSP were found in Colombian black population. A native Andean was found to caryy HTLV-I whose subtype was exactly same as that of Japanese HTLV-I carrier. A Bolivian mestizo mixbred with Andes native and Spanish Caucasian was found to be HAM/TSP.The virus of this patient was also the subtype of Japanese HTLV-I. HLA-DRB1^*DQB1^*of Jamaican infective dermatitis patient was the sames as those of Japanese HAM/TSP,indicating that a particular HLA-DRB1^*DQB1 type was cosmoplitan for HAM/TSP patients of various ethnic groups. On the other hand, the black patients with ATL or HAM/TSP showed a unique HLA background (DRB1^*DQB1^*07-0201) which was not present among Japanese ATL and HAM/TSP.Thus, two categories of HLA types were associated with ATL and HAM/TSP in the world. Of most interest was the evidence that a Bolivian mestizo HAM/TSP patient had a pair of two HLA haplotypes, one was Mongoroid trait and the other was Caucasoid origin. These results suggested that the HTLV-I carriers and patients maight have came from Africa and Mongoroid leneages and developed ATL and HAM/TSP as well as infective dermatitis. The ethnic susceptibility to ATL,HAM/TSP or other category of diseases may be determined by HLA polymerphism.
