The clinical relevance of contact allergy to dental materials was examined by the patch test.
In the patch test for workers in dental clinics, the subjects were healthy male volunteers, comprising students at a dental school and dental technology and instructors. Patch tests were performed using Finn-chambers on Scanpor tapes for the closed patch test. Forty substances related the dental materials were examined. A positive reaction was obtained with Hg, Cu, Cr, Au, epoxy resin, phenol resin and gypsum.
In the investigation at dermatological clinics, 38,145 cases were patch tested for 38 substances related to dental materials in the Department of Dermatology, Osaka and Ikeda Kaisei Hospitals between 1989 and 1994. A positive reaction was obtained against Co, Ni, Mn, benzoyl peroxide, balsam of Peru, glutaraldehyde and fragrance mix. The response in 14 cases was considered to be related with dental materials (Hg, Pd, Au, Ni, Co, Cr) because of apparent improvement following removal of metallic restorations.
Further studies are necessary to determine the clinical relevance of contact allergy to dental materials.
