Research Abstract |
Based on hybrid virtual work principle, a numerical method applicable to elastic and visco-elastic progressive failure analysis was developed by Hamajima. To describe discontinuity between continuous elements, equal rigidity, rigidity multiplier of elements alpha and that between elements beta are defined in this report. Various accuracy analyzes demonstrate the error of this method can be reduced to 5% for both elastic and visco-elastic problems when beta is 10. Finaly, the analysis results of a crust movement model are presented, which shows that this method seems highly effective to the progressive failure analysis of geomaterials. The serious earthquake called great Hanshin Earthquake, happened on 17Jan., 1995 at southern. Hyogo perfecture in Japan, caused tremendous damage to the district. The importance of study of the crustal movement is recognized through this great earthquake. It is, however, the conventional method for evaluation of the behaviors of crustal movement is based o

n the continuum mechanics model, and have not given any quantitative explanation on the progressive failure process acompanying the generation of faults in the earth. Until now, some simple models in which the earth crustal structure is modified by several crustal blocks divided by faults, and only slidings between blocks and the rotations of each block are considered, is developed to treat this problem. In this report, the same geometrical block-model is accepted by Hamajima. An analysis method which can treat the deformation in the blocks, the slidings and openings between blocks, is proposed. Also in this model, the mechanical effect of small scale discontinuities in the blocks is modified in the stiffness of elements by introducing a constitutive equation. A numerical simulation on the movement of crustal structures of Japan islands is carried out. The results show that the tensiling failure region calculated by the proposed model is very agreed with that of the active fault zones known in Japan islands. Less
