Research Abstract

(1) The original structure of the dry-distilllation apparatus was modified in order to keep the inner temperature homogeneous, to effectively cool the exhaust-gas, and to wash the inside-wall with an appropriate solvent.
By using this modified version of the apparatus, following results were obtained.
(2) Dry-distilllation of animal wastes containing ^3H,^<14>C,^<32>P,^<35>S,^<45>Ca, ^<51>Cr and ^<125>I produced a highly condensed residues that were stable during a long period of storage time.
(3) Recovery of the isotopes after the dry-distilllation was almost quantitative in every case.
(4) Dry-distilllation of non-animal solid wastes such as paper wastes and plastic wastes was also successful to substantially reduce the waste volume.
(5) In the process of dry-distilllation of solid wastes including papers and plastics, most radioisotopes tested could be recovered quantitatively. However, ^<35>S-labeled compounds were trapped inside of the pipe in the apparatus, and require further improvements of the process to completely recover them.
