Research Abstract |
As many as 172 foreign patients (95 males and 77 females) visited The Jikei University Hospital in the period of 19 years, starting 1976. In the period from April in 1993 to March in 1994, among 49 Mental Health Centers in Japan, 9 Centers experienced foreign clients (26 cases). In the period from April in 1993 to March in 1994, among 11 Health Centers in Tochigi Prefecture (as a model case), 4 Centers experienced foreign clients (5 cases). Our clinical experience indicates the following problems and tasks. 1) Demand for psychiatric therapy or counseling has been increasing among foreign patients, especially those who stay in Japan so long that they can enjoy the benefit of health insurance. 2) Conversely, even in cases where psychiatric treatment is needed, it may be precluded by legal problems, such as overstaying, and by economical problems, such as treatment fees. 3) Despite the problems of communicatin between doctor and patient, such as the language barrier, it is also that psychiatric approach was effective to a certain extent for foreign patient with mental disorders. 4) It is desired that Japanese pychiatrists, pchichotherapists and institutions will be further internationalized.
