This study was preformed to develop environmental consious household detergents.
In tis purpos, biodegradable polymentacrylate complymerized with vinylpyrrolidon was studied as a detergent builder instead of sodium tripolyphosphate (STP).
The characteristics of the copolymer as a detergent builder were measured by detergency, calcium-exchanging rate, and bunding capacity of calcium ions.
Also, we measured remaind calcium in washed cloths, by Inductively coupled Plasma (ICP), and Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA).
1) Optimum washing ability was obtaind, when the content in detergent was from nearly 40% up of the polymer.
The polymer had match better builder effect than Zeolite in detergent formulations, becouse it had suitable calcium-exchenging rate and binding capacity of calcium ions.
The polymer with number average molecular weight of 8,000 to 18,000, was indicated to have good detergent builder effects.
2) We confirmed that removing ability of calcium was six times better, with the polymer to without the polymer, in based alkylbenzene sulfonate as detergent formulations.
The capacity of sequestering and complex-building for metal ions, was indicated the polymer nearly equal to that of as STP,and better than thet of Zeolite.
3) Chemical structure of residual calcium atoms, which were adsorped on washed cloth, was analyzed by ESCA-method. The result was shown thet calcium atoms were bonded to sulfate radicals.
4) A detergent which was conteing the polymer, had good detergency in Japanese and Europian usage. Especially, it had good practical perfomance, by useing of front-loding household washer.
