This is a report on the main theme of the present study of the collection, analysis and discussion of data on the establishment and development of Hoshina Koichi's theory of Japanese Language education.
Koichi Hoshina emphasized the establishment of Japanese language method, but is was impossible to do so without consolidating Japanese language which was basic to Japanese language teaching, especially the establishment of the standard Japanese language. I took into consideration "Guides for Japanese Language Method" published in 1901 and found that he discussed in detail the issues of establishement of the standard Japanese languaage in it.
I also examined the development of his theory of Japanese language and learned that he developed it through the linguistic studies as both a linguist and a Japanese linguist, the studies of issues of Japanese language and Japanese letters committed to him when he was a part-time staff in the department of library in the Ministry of Education, and the experiences he had in fact finding of Japanese langauge education in various places in 1897.
Furthermore I considered his theory of Japanese language education through the reports on school inspection while he was studying abroad in Germany (published by Ministry of Education) and the analysis of his poblications after studying abroad in Germany. In his reports, he pointed out the differences in native language education between Japan and Germany, which showed his views on Japanese language education and the direction of improving Japanese language education. These reports proved extremely valuable. From the consideration of his publications after stydying abroad, I found that he attempted to make his theory practical, clearly put Japanese language education in the education of language, and deepen his studies of the method.
