近傍銀河中の天体の可視光および赤外線観測と、それに基づく銀河の化学進化の研究

Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、銀河の化学進化史を調べることにある。具体的には近傍銀河を構成する個々の天体を研究することにより、1いつ、どのような状況で銀河が生成されたのか、2その後銀河内で星生成が起きたのか、3さらには、現在の銀河内部の星間空間における物質の循環がいかにして起きたのか、という三つの視点から銀河の化学進化史を調べる。この三つを組み合わせた全体として、現在の近傍銀河を形作る天体、星間物質はいかなるものかを観測に基づいて調べる。
現在のところ、主として、3に関連する詳細研究の成果がでているが、その研究成果は1と2に還元されつつある。具体的な成果の大きな結果の一つは大マゼラン星雲内部での物質の循環に関する論文である(Matsuura他,MNRAS,in press,arXiv:0903.1123)。Spitzer Space Telescopeによる大マゼラン星雲の撮像、および分光のデータを使い、寿命を終えつつある星から星間空間に還元されるダストやガスの量を測定した。それを星生成率として消費されるガスの量と比較した。結果は、現在大マゼラン星雲では、現在、星生成によるガスの消費量が、寿命を終えつつある星からのガスの供給量を上回っていることがわかった。ただし、幸いにして、大マゼラン星雲は銀河の内部に大量のガスを蓄えているため、しばらくは現在の星生成率を維持することができるであろう。この論文は、論文審査の段階で「Set Milestone」(重要な指標となる論文)と高く評価された。
また、銀河のダストの生成史に関する論文をScience誌に発表した(第二著者)。この論文では、漸近赤色巨星からのダストの生成が、現在考えられていたよりも早く時期始まり、銀河がダストで満たされ始まる時期というのも、早くなるだろうということを観測に基づいて示した。
