Research Abstract

By the present studies, we made 4BS formula for determining appropriate cage size for experimental animals (Concerning non-human primates, 4BS formula is not practicable and cage sizes were caracterized by their postures and behavior). We translated the summerized manuscript into English and asked reviewing it to experts in USA, Canada (CA), EC (European Community) and United Kingdom. Cage sizes for mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbit, dogs, cats and farm animals determined by 4BS formula and that for non-human primates are fortunately in much conformity with American and European standards.
The present status of USA, EC, Canada and UK, however, improvement of psycological factors, such as environment enrichment, behavioral enrichment or socialization (groop housing) are remarkably considered in the fields of animal experimentation. They give a hiding (resting) place and toys to experimetal animals. Since we feel it very difficult to evaluate the efficiency of the pscycological factors, we only commented about it in our manuscript.
We will finally propose the present work to Japanese society, initially to Association of Animal Experimentation Facilities of National University and Japanese Association for Laboratory Animal Science. We convince that we can have a better interrelation with American and European community of scientific collaboration by the enforcement of the present work.
