Research Abstract |
Catholic orders, such as Jesuites, vigorously sent out the missions to China from the end of the 16th century on. As a result, many Chinese books of the Ming and Qing periods brought back to Europe by the missionaries are now kept in Rome and other cities of Italy. Nevertheless, it is often the case that these books are left almost untouched. These collections are not only precious treasures of the history of Sino-Western relations, but contains a lot of materials of academic value. It is ceratin that research into these collections can provide each field of sinology with new sources. In the present project of the Interantional Scientific Research, the main object is to investigate the Chinese collections of public libraries in Italy and to lay the foundation for compiling the catalog. First, a questionnaire was sent to all the major libraries in Italy, then, based on it, a general survey was cried out. Of all others, we have to cite the collection of the National Library of Rome, which

is the largest and amounts to about 3,000 titles. At present, the work was finished as to the public libraries. Entry in computer is now in progress. We are making final preparation for the publication of a book style catalog. The points of tile result are as follows : (1) There exist, though not so many, some Ming editions, which can he considered to bc brought to Europe in the end of the I6th and the beginning of the I7th ventury. These books have not yet been reported and deserve to be carefully studied : (2) There are an amount of imperial editions in the National Library of Rome. They were confiscated presumably by the Italian army at the Boxers rebellion. This is also a new discovery : (3) Also in the Library in Rome, we could find many old editions of popular ballads from Canton, which could give precious materials to the study of Chinese vernacular literature ; (4) Inscriptions by thc missionaries, which we come across occasionally in thc Chinese books brought in the early years, can be used for the study of the development of European Sinology.
