Research Abstract |
For the purpose of the research of the formation of Tantric Buddhism in Mahayana Buddhism, we, eight investigators, gathered to hold a session every month from 1995 to 1997. We also invited some scholars, who are interested in this subject, to present their latest results. Based upon the sessions, we clarified the following points. Tantric Buddhism was used to be characterized by its magic, mysticism, ritual, heathenism, symbolism. However, some canons of Mahayana Buddhism contain magic spells for protection, and divine miracles are mentioned in the context of meditation. In some vinaya texts, particular behavior and rituals are specified. Some bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism are originated from Hinduism. We clarified the process of the formation of Tantric rituals with the modification by adding the ideology of Mahayana Buddhism, when the Tantric Buddhism adopted the magical practice belonging to the Indian society or vedic rituals. Through the collaboration of the investigators, the relationship between Mahayana Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism was clarified on some aspects such as thought, ritual, practice. On the contrary, some particular hypothetical relationship between Tantric Buddhism and ancient Indian culture was denied. We are preparing to publish the result of the research of three year project from Hozokan, Kyoto in 1998.
