Research Abstract |
The problem of dynamics of abnormal weather is complicated and has various aspects. In the present study, this problem is treated in the light of the behavior of Rossby wave in extratropics, 40 day oscillation in the tropics and the interaction between the tropics and extratropics. Each part of the investigation is made in corperation. Nakamura and his collaborator have succeeded in the formulation of the activity flux associated with 3-dimensional propagation in the zonally-varying basic flows. This new formulation is applied to various cases of blocking phenomena. Matsuda and his collaborator have studied the propagation of Rossby wave in the zonally-varying basic flow by the numerical experiments. The barotropic model on the sphere is used in the experiments. The amplification of Rossby wave in the jet exit region is shown. Takahashi and his collaborator have made data analysis of 40 day oscillation in the tropics in connection with year to year variation. Satoh and his collaborator have investigated an interaction between the tropical circulation and mid-latitude one from the aspect of meridional circulation and angular momentum transport.
