Research Abstract |
This research aimed at fundamental investigation to develop a machine dsign support system based on the ideas of knowledge intensive engineering. Knowledge intensive engineeering is a new type of engineering which flexibly utilizes a large amount of engineering knowlede, including codified and non-codified knowledg to generate more added value. The research tackled the following three isssues. (1) Fundamental research into the integration of codified knowledge and nono-codified knowledge using hypertext technology and network technology. (2) Fundamental research into handling knowledge about whole of the product life cycle, including design, production, operation, maintenance, and reuse and recycling. (3) The development of fundamental technologies for the knowledge intensive machine dsign support system and its prototype. In 1995 and 1996, regarding issues (1) and (3) , a hypertext based design documentation system was developed. This system can integrate both codifed and non-codifed knowledge including visual information. It c record, edit, and reuse operations to the KIEF (Knowledge Intensive Engineering Framework) system that was seperately developed by our group to support knowledge intensive engineering activities. The recorded design documentation is created in the HTML format and the system runs on Visual Wave system of ParcPlac, Inc.In 1997, the design documentation system was improved to issue design documents that can be accesed by distributed designers through WEB browsers on Internet to conduct collaboratively knowledge intensive engineering activities. Regarding issue (2) , in 1996.a varuety of product life cycle knowledge was experimentally collected an in 1997 implemented on the design documentation system. A case study of machine dsign was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the knowledge intensive machine design support system.
