Research Abstract |
The water soaked symptom of melon (Cucumis melo L.) fruits was studied. 1.Temporary shading during the rapid growth of melon fruit induced the occurrence of water soaked symptom. 2.The grade of symptom was different from varieties, i.e.it appeared heavily in 'Andesu' but not in 'Ruster'. 3.Sucrose accumulation in the fruit was greatly inhibited by shading, while hexose accumulation was not inhibited. 4.Acetaldehyde and ethanol concentrations increased under shading condition. 5.Ethylene production was also accelerated under shading condition with concomitant decrease in fruit hardiness. 6.Both defoliation and over loading did not induce the water soaked symptom. 7.ABA sprayd on leaves accelerated the softening of fruit and ethylene production.
