Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to cast light on the operations of the zaibatsu trading company in Asia after the onset of the Chinese-Japanese War. The operations of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. are examined as a case study in the research. The analysis is centered on the operations that the firms conducted jointly with the military. The analysis reveals, for example, the role playd by the Zaibatsu firms, at the request or by the order of the military, in purchasing agricultural product from farmers in China and distributing goods in the Asian region particularly the inport of foods from Vietnam and Thailand to Japan and China. Securing food for the occupied territories was the most significant issue in order to feed the deployed army and to maintain peace and order of such territories, and this was the factor that determined the course of war. The operations of the Gunpai Association were another issue of great importance for the purpose of maintaining the value of the war note in the occupied territories Mitsui & Co., Ltd.playd a vital role, here too. lso studied in this research is the opium trafficking. The Japanese military sold opium during the Chinese-Japanese war and the profit was put into secret service funds and the like. This research unveils for the first time the entire picture of Mitsui's involvement through the company's inside information. The research entirely discloses the wartime operations of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., which playd a significant role to prosecute war by uniting with the military, taking part at the same time in the dirtiest crime of war.
