The rational design of separation process requires the knowledge of phase equilibrium behavior. Correlation or prediction of vapor-liquid equilibia (VLE) usually is performed by using activity coefficients for liquid phase. The infinite dilution activity coefficients are useful to understand the non-ideality of mixtures. In this work, an apparatus based on the gas stripping method was used.
In 1995, the infinite dilution activity coefficients of alcohol (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, or 2-butanol) in alkane (tetradecane or hexadecane) were measured in the region of 20-80ﾟC.In 1996, the infinite dilution activity coefficients of ether (disthyl ether (DEE), methyl tertiarybutyl ether (MTBE), or diisopropyl ether (DIPE) in alkane (octane, tetradecane, or hexadecane) were measured in the region of 10-40ﾟC.Ethers are of interest since these additives have been claimed to improve the combustion efficiency of alkane. In addition, the infinite dilution activity coefficients of alcohols in water were measured, because the volatility of slight harmful component in aqueous solution is very important for the environmental problem of water pollution.
The experimental results obtained were compared with the values optained by group-contribution model, ASOG.The experimental results were predicted by ASOG,and correlation performance was discussed. In future work, an improvement of ASOG should be considered, the infinite dilution activity coefficients of alcohols or ethers in water should be measured systematically.
