Research Abstract |
Analysis of electrogastrography (EGG) recordings is difficult because of contamination by myoelectrical activity, leaving no option but to analyze changes in frequency and amplitude. Analysis of frequency and amplitude requires computer-based fast Fourier transformation (FFT) techniques, but dependable software capable of determining power values has hitherto been unavailable, Development of such software was finally completed last year. We have used this software in two research projects, obtaining the results presented below. 1) The effect of gastric mucosal damage on gastric motility is presently unknown. In fact, the literature is completely silent on the effect of acute gastric mucosal damage. We therefore used EGG analysis to compare gastric motility before and after mucosal injury induced by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). 1 week), EGG recordings were made for a period of 30 minutes at fasting and after a meal (377 Kcal, 269 g). EGG recordings were made using bipolar leads, with the high-cut filter set at 0.1 Hz and a time constant of 3 seconds. Fasting EGG frequency was 3.008 = 0.197 cpm before EMR, and was significantly higher at 3.237 = 0.234 cpm after EMR.The postprandial EGG frequency was 3.402 = 0.218 cpm before EMR, and showed a tendency to be higher at 3.515 = 0.218 cpm after EMR, but the difference was not statistically significant It was concluded from these findings that acute gastric mucosal damage exerts an effect on fasting EGG frequency. 2) With the intention of investigating gastrointestinal dysfunction in scleroderma, we compared fasting and postprandial EGG findings in 13 scleroderma patients. There was a tendency for the fasting EGG waveform to be characterized by low amplitude and irregular rhythm. Postprandial EGG waveforms fell into one of two groups : waveforms similar to those recorded before eating were exhibited in some cases, and waveforms in which amplitude and rhythm had changed to a near-normal state in other cases.
