Research Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory study was to identify the expert care strategies used by nursing staff who care for residents in long-term, inter-mediate geriatric care facilities. Twenty two nursing staffs of 10 facilities were selected as experts by a nursing manager in each facility. Data were collected through semi-structures interviews and observations. Practical knowledge of experts of care for elders were identified.
Several major caregiving strategies were identified through content analysis, such as knowing the residents' as individuals with unique personalities and histories, handling problematic behaviors, making relationship with residents, using environmental cues as a specific care strategies. They were clearly aware of resident' humanity and were careful to preserve their basic dignity. And they had developed experties through committment to caring activities, and they had developed confidence and comfort in working with elders.
