Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the pathgenesis of idiopathic scoliosis. We hypothesized that scoliosis was sometime arised in growth, but deformity was useally reduced by natural correction force. We concidered that decrease of this natural correction gorce make deformity to true scoliosis, and it's related to balance of sex hormone and growth hormone.
Rat's tail were fixted into looped shape, 6 weeks later fixation was removed. After removing of fixation, the tail of rat were remained looped shape deformity, and a deformity was garadually decresed. We concidered these course of decreasing deformity as a model of natural correction of scoliosis.
We used 4 weeks male, female and ovarectomied (OVX) rat. These models were divided 2 groups and devided 6 subgroups, C : control (FC : female, CM : male, CO : OVX), G : growth hormone treated 17ug*3/W,2weeks (GF,GM,Go).
Two and 4 weeks after fixation, deformity of tail were examined in radiograph. Deformity were mesured within 5 verte … More brae and 4 disc by Cobb's methods, and wedge of disc were caliculated by total of 4 disc wedge angles.
The dosage of GH was not affected development of weight. The curve of tail was 144.9゚ ]SY.+-.[16.4 in CM group, 137.7゚ ]SY.+-.[23.5 in CF,143.5゚ ]SY.+-.[18.6 in CO,after 2 weeks, each was 93.3゚ ]SY.+-.[40.1,42.8゚ ]SY.+-.[9.6 (p<0.001 vs. CM), 34.4゚ ]SY.+-.[9.2 (p<0.001 vs. CM), and after 4 weeks 84.2゚ ]SY.+-.[43.0,44.1゚ ]SY.+-.[17.6 (p<0.001 vs. CM), 40.3゚ ]SY.+-.[7.9 (p<0.001 vs. CM). The disc wedge angles was 96.5゚ ]SY.+-.[11.2 in CM group, 85.6゚ ]SY.+-.[19.1 in CF,96.4゚ ]SY.+-.[12.8 in CO,after 2 weeks, each was 47.5゚ ]SY.+-.[21.7,24.7゚ ]SY.+-.[10.3 (p<0.001 vs. CM), 21.1゚ ]SY.+-.[9.0 (p<0.001 vs. CM), and after 4 weeks 58.5゚ ]SY.+-.[31.9,28.3゚ ]SY.+-.[15.0 (p<0.001 vs. CM), 27.1゚ ]SY.+-.[7.7 (p<0.001 vs. CM).
Compaired with C group and GH group, only in OVX group the siginificant difference was observed each 2 and 4 weeks (p<0.05).
This results indicate that the balance of sex hormone and growth hormone have a possibility to affect the worsening of idiopathic scoliosis. Less
