The purpose of this joint research project by Korean and Okinawa scholars was to compare and identify common socio-cultural features and differences between Southern Korea and Okinawa .
The participants to the project were composed of specialists in social organization , ancestor rituals , kinship organization . Shamanism , tug of war , and folktales , horticulture , and regional development and environment problems .
The survey was conducted from 1996 to 1998 by individual and group bases . The survey spots were mainly such villages as Chisoku-do , Kwanju City , Naup-ri , Chuju Ialand , and Tsukazan and Aguni in Okinawa .
The finding were various and more then we had expected . The researchers found common features and regional variations of Asian culture and institutions in their own fields . For semitropical locations , both Okinawa and Cheju Islands have followed same directions in economic phase and shared environment problems . Our next step will be to pursue further the actual conditions of regional culture in Korea and Okinawa and to investigate the socio-historical backgrounds which produced variations in each society .
