By the combination of Database technology with newly developed communication technologies, new research areas are opening. Information retrieval on the web. Digital libraries, electronic publishing, e-commerce are examples of such areas. These technologies will contribute to change information distribution and economic systems. Under these backgrounds this project focused on "integration" of "various medias", "Various systems", and "users" utilizing database technologies.
There are the following four groups and we also tried to integrate their results.
(1) Data models, algorithms and architectures are developed to realize high-level functions and high-performance operations suitable for next generation databases.
(2) By integrating various media, continuous media support and virtual 3-D spaces are developed.
(3) By handling a distributed system as a dynamic changing systems, methods to construct large and flexible distributed systems are developed.
(4) Database Technology is used to support cooperation among users. Several Application systems are also developed.
The results are published by international conferences (CODAS in 96, DMIB in 97, FODO in 98, CODAS-2 in 99, and DANTE in 99) and proceedings are published by World Scientific Springer and IEEE. Special issues of academic journals and mid-project report are also published. The book containing the major results is planed to be published in 2000. The results gave strong impacts to world database community.
