Research Abstract |
Researchers in the fields of cultural and engineering science have cooperated to establish standards for the transcription of Japanese sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In other words, we have established standards for introducing IPA as a kind of global standard for the description of Japanese sounds, through integrating research findings of linguistic aspects such as phonetics and phonology, of language educational aspect such as Japanese language education, and of acoustic engineering and speech processing aspects such as the acoustic analysis of sounds, speech recognition, and speech synthesis. Concerning sound materials as our research objects, we not only utilize the existing sound database but also record, gather, and edit our own sound database. Following the results of questionnaires, we have picked up the most variable sounds and made acoustic analyses of them in our research. In order to make a contrastive study of these sounds, we have also carried out

acoustic analyses of speech sounds of other languages. To establish more objective standards for transcription, we have applied the method of acoustic analysis to sound transcription by means of auditory impressions, and propose to introduce a new the acoustic feature system that enables us to make quantitative and qualitative comparisons. We have also searched for ways of applying the problems of IPA transcription to such problems as the teaching of the Japanese language, and of the handicapped. Certain aspects of this research can be applied to development of the computer assisted Japanese learning systems. Concerning the computer processing of IPA, we have considered the existing problems of the current numerical codes for IPA and propose a new coding system to solve those problems. Furthermore, we introduce the system of IPA transcription to the field of speech processing as speech synthesis and speech recognition for the purpose of establishing a standard for describing and transcribing synthesized Japanese sounds. Concerning speech recognition, we will try to utilize IPA as a kind of language independent coding system. Less
