Research Abstract

A movable type bistatic imaging lidar has been developed for measuring the local weather at daytime as well as nighttime. A transmitting system composed of a Nd : YAG laser was constructed compactly for setting it inside a car. Maximum output of a laser was 200 mJ with a repetition rate of 10 Hz at a wavelength of 532 nm. A receiving system was composed of a high sensitive cooled CCD camera with a gate controlled image intensifier used as a high speed shutter. By synchronizing gate time of image intensifier to each laser shot, the background intensity at daytime could be reduced to 1/5000 without reducing the intensity of laser scattering signals. This method has a capable of getting an image of laser beam trajectory with a good SNR at daytime.
We have studied improvement and feasibility of this system on the bases of four field observations. Time variation of color coded vertical profiles of aerosol, fogs and clouds was displayed with a temporal resolution of 1-2 minutes. Lidar observation campaign were. Made at Happo' one alpine ski area, Hakuba for 10 days from February 7 tol6 during the period of the 18Lh Olympic Winter Games, Nagano, 1998 in Japan. Lidar observations were rated highly by the weather information staff because Lidar data on fog distribution and cloud base height contributed largely to weather forecast almost every days.
The research project was made perfectly according to plan. Then, some valuable results were obtained, which were presented in papers .and in domestic or international conferences. From field observations, it was demonstrated that the bistatic imaging lidar was useful for monitoring the local weather information.
