Research Abstract

We have developed the prototype of the ESR endoscope which is capable of getting information on free radicals generated in the human body. The ESR endoscope is designed as combing ESR spectroscopy and endoscope, thus it can get both the visual information and free radical distribution information. The ESR endoscope is the L-band ESR spectrometer with the single turn loop coil working at the low microwave frequency, 700 MHz to 1,5 GHz, and it can measure the ESR spectrum of any free radical species beside the distribution of the free radicals.
During two years research period, we have focused on solving obstacles when combing the ESR spectroscopy and the endoscope, such as the interference of the CCD video signals with microwave signals. Using the modern technology including newly developed thin coaxial cables, we have mede the ESR endoscope with 2mm diameter signal turn loop coil for ESR probe, which is fit to the common endoscope (3 mm diameter). This prototype can be used as the general endoscope for human.
We also developed the multi-functional loop coil used in the ESR endoscope, which can detect the oxygen concentration and trap free radicals with the short lifetime. To measure the oxygen concentration by the ESR endoscope, the loop coil covered with oxygen permeable materials was developed. Furthermore, to trap the short lifetime free radicals by the loop coil, we also made the loop coil covered with the polymer materials having spin trap goups as side chains.
