Research Abstract |
Research into alternative healing practices in modern Japan (esp. from the late period of the Meiji era to the early period of the Showa era), based on source mater lals published in those days, was made to clarify their characteristics and to ciscuss the meaning of their points on medicine and health in the light of the present. Results of an analysis of the related source materials were as follows 1. Major types of alternative healing practices a. Health maintenance method with culture building b. Robust physique technique c. Reijutsu (Spiritual growth method) d. Ryojutsu (Legally unprotected private therapy) e. Diet (including a fasting treatment) 2. Features of alternative healing practices in modern Japan a. Emphasis on mind power and mind-body relation in recovering, maintaining and promoting health b. Emphasis on the fullness of hara (lower abdomen) as the vital center of man c. Reliance on self-healing power in spite of the differences of their methods d. A holistic view, to some extent, of a healthy life
