Research Abstract |
Fog formation in a basin and a forecast for it has been investigated. Results are summarized as follows. By the observation with a video camera from a mountain top fogs were found almost to be of large scale type. About 60% of fogs developed to the ground, but the rest were stratus type. The former types were often observed in autumn, but in the other seasons both types were observed in the same ratio. The results of examination of fog formation mechanism suggest the important role of local circulation near the surrounding slopes of the basin. Investigations of forecast for the basin fog were developed to test ideas that the quantity of dew expected to be generated during night time relates closely to the formation of fog. It was shown that the general conditiions have an effect on the nocturnal cooling considerably, especially on the basin air exchange by the upper wind.So it will be necessary to estimate this effect quantitatively.
