Research Abstract |
Along the Pacific Coast in our northern regions.we have a periodic very cold east wind called "YAMASE wind" which results frequently in a dense fog.As it is accompanied by low temperatures and by lack of sunshine, many crops have frequently suffered serious cold weather damage. In addition, poor visibility due to dense fog has caused serious troubles to all traffic services. In order to take countermeasures against such troubles, we have recently developed an artificial for-eliminator called the electrostatic fog-liquefier and obtained good results not only in our laboratory but also in outdoors. The apparatus composed of fine meshelectrodes, however, tended to be affected by a strong wind, so it needed frequent mending. Our report describes basic researches on development of the modified model, in which we exchanged fine mesh electrodes for rod ones. From the fundamental experiments we getfollowing three results, and consider they are caused by ionic wind Effciency of rod eiectrode arrangement is several times as that of the mesh electrode arrangement. A thick rod is not always more efficient that a thin rod. The maximum liquefied rate is observed in case of almost the same veiocity of the ionic wind as that of the fog flow In experiments we arranged wire electrodes and rod ones in a line aiong the fog flow.We intend to make experiments to examine which of electrode arrangements of above mentioned type or zigzag one we should choose.Electeic field distributions and ionic wind flows are also problems to be analyzed.
