Research Abstract |
The objective of this study was to use diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to help detect the dynamics of brain edema that develops after experimental brain injury and brain injury coupled with decompressive craniectomy. (materials and methods) Fluid percussion brain injury was induced in sixty adult Wister rats. After injury we monitored the brain edema by using T1, T2 weighted imaging and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. These MR images were compared with pathological findings (Results) The information obtained by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging at acute phase of brain injury (30min after injury) reflected the damage of blood brain barrier observed by pathological findings using horse-radish peroxidase. At acute phase of brain injury diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging provides us useful information about the damage of blood brain barrier.
