Research Abstract

本研究の目的は宇宙最遠方のQSOを発見し、これを用いて宇宙最電離を解明することにある。本年度はUKIDSS近赤外線サーベイによって新しく観測されたデータを用いてQSO候補天体の選択を行った。
これら候補天体を同定するため、主としてハワイ大学の8-10mの望遠鏡を用いて分光観測を行ったが新しいQSOは発見できなかった。UKIDSSサーベイの進行状況が全計画の1/2程度まで進んでおり、QSOの個数密度の進化をz<6から外挿すると、この領域でのQSO発見の期待値は~4個程度である。従ってこの領域のQSOの発見個数が0であることは、QSOの個数密度がz>7において大きく減少していることを示している。これはQSOの進化史にとって劇的な変化であり、QSOの進化理論に制限をつけることができる重要な結果である。現在はこの結果を最終確認すべく、UKIDSSサーベイの残り1/2の領域について鋭意探査を継続中である。
QSO探査と平行して既知の遠方QSOに関する調査も行った。昨年度我々がその周囲に取り巻くホスト銀河およびライマンα輝線星雲を発見したz=6.4におけるQSOを10m望遠鏡を用いて詳細分光観測を行った。この分光データを用いて、QSOを背景光として利用することにより5.615<z<6.365における宇宙の電離度の調査を行った。QSOを背景光とした直説的な方法による宇宙の電離度の探査がz=6.365の遠方にまで遡って行われたのはこの研究が初めてである。
この結果5.915<z<6.365の間において、ガンピーターソンの谷とよばれる全くQSOの紫外光が検出されない暗黒領域が見つかった。これは200Mpcという前例をみない広大な領域に及んでおり、5.615<z<6.365の宇宙は再電離が完了しておらず、宇宙がより中性であった暗黒時代にさしかかっていると考えて矛盾しない。
