Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to examine the model of the group development in the encounter group and the model of growth mechanism of members in youth in encounter group. Though group approaches consist of variety of school of thoughts such as group psychotherapy, T-group, encounter group and so on, change mechanism or growth mechanism of members has not been clarified enough. In the first place, interactions among these school of thoughts are scarce. In this study, based on literature research, the history covering a wide variety of group approaches was investigated. These group approaches were categorized according to their characteristics. Then, psychoanalytic viewpoint was comprehensively introduced to this study. Hirayama' s model tries to clarify the mechanism of personal change and understanding of self and others in the group process in terms of "conscious, unconscious, verbal and nonverbal communication and feedback". On the other hand, psychoanalysis tries to explain the client's self understanding and insight through interpretation based on the model of transference and countertransference. It became clear that (1) Hirayama's model has much to do with psychoanalytic viewpoints, (2) model of projective identification and container-contained model shed light on the change mechanism of the members in encounter group, (3) Hirayama's model deals with the phenomena psychoanalysis does not refers to, and (4) by introducing the technique of interpretation a new group approach was developed and was named "humanistic and object-relational group approach".
