Research Abstract

In Japanese cities, Spatial symbolism is the important factor of land use. Some traditional spatial symbolism is transformed to the new spatial symbolism under the present conditions in development of urban landscape projects. In Kanazawa, the traditional spatial symbolism of the castle town is transformed to "Komachinami" project. In kyoto, many people was in opposition to the new European Style bridge across the Kamo River. In this case, people feel that these facilities were deviated from the spatial symbolism of Kamo River area.
Once Social Value system was changed, the meaning of spatial symbol was changed. But the changing process of the meaning of spatial symbolism is very various styles. Many Gokoku Jinjaes, Shrine of fallen soldiers, are established in the early Meiji Era. Gokoku Jinjaes, they called Shoukonshaes in that time, are for emperor's fallen soldiers, not for Taikun's fallen soldiers. As time goes by, they are for nation's fallen solders. After the world war the second, these shrines is said that they are symbol of militarism, so they loss the support of nation. But they are still alive in changing the symbolism, they make their image for the people.
Spatial Symbolism is composed by two different kind of symbols, fetish symbol and instrumental symbol. some cases are fetish symbol is manifest, but some cases instrumental symbol is manifest. We need more careful analysis of spatial symbolism for empirical study in cities of Japan.
