In this study, we have proceeded the study and researches to know the problems for the purpose of using wooden houses, Kyo-machiya in the historical center of Kyoto. In 1997. as the results of this study, we could (1)construct the database of the present condition of wooden building stocks in the center of Kyoto, and (2)estimate the oldness and earthquake-proof of these stocks, and proposed the methods of reinforcing and repairing. In 1998, based, on this results, we proceeded the study as following ; 1. Production of the 'Kyo-machiya' model, and evaluation of earthquake resistance : We made the 'Kyo-machiya' model by CG because we must know the structure theory of Kyo-machiya. As results, we could pick up as the characteristics, (1)Choice of elements as Ura-Omote, (2)Shortness of walls in the direction of the frontage, (3)Joints that can be changed to demolish, or repair, (4)Concept of the construction of structure elements. And for earthquake resistance of Kyo-machiya, we could propose (1)to keep good condition of structure elements, (2)to keep original condition of the joint of columns and beams, (3)to solve the problems on earthquake resistant design, (4)to develop the earthquake resistant soil-wall especially in the direction of frontage. 2. Present condition and problems of Maintenance System : We analyzed the maintenance by users of wooden houses in Kyoto, and evaluated present condition of it. As results, we cleared (1)Decrease of the ordinary maintenance, and increase of reforming houses, (2)lntention to improve houses in the use of business shop or three-generation family home, (3)Existence of traditional maintenance system of Kyo-machiya, and (4)Depression of it by economic condition of users, and by the change of social-economic environment. And then, we could propose to reconstruct the maintenance system in the future.
