Research Abstract |
Research in this year consisted of clinical electroretinographic experiment in human and basic animal experiment using retinas of cats and chicks. We recorded multifocal electroretinogram in glaucoma patients and controls. In glaucoma eyes, each multifocal components reduced and peak latencies increased. However, whether this is the result of dysfunction of inner retinal function remains undetermined. For M-wave, TTX which suppresses Na-dependent action potential did not have effects on M-wave, but decreased off-response of ERG.On-response of M-wave inverted with intravitreal injection of APB and aspartate abolished it. Sustained negative response of ERG did not change with APB.Thus, M-wave contributed little to regular ERG. For scotopic threshold response (STR), we could measure the depth profile of this response. STR was maximum in the inner reticular layer and the response was inverted at the 60% retinal depth. This suggested that there is the current sink at the proximal site and the current source at the distal site. Study using potassium-selective microelectrode revealed close relationship between the change in potassium concentration and the electroretinographic change.
