Research Abstract |
In this study, we have investigated the relationship between stomatognathic system(including dental occlusal function) and systemic condition(including bone mineral density), and also the usefulness of mouth-protector for elevation of the muscle strength. Nineteen male athletes were participated as volunteer subjects. The following factors of the stomatognathic system were measured ; biting force, biting force valance, gonial angle, and corpus mandibular length. To analyze multiple correlation, there were significant positive correlation (p<O.O1) between corpus mandibular length and bone mineral density, but no correlation between bone mineral density and biting force were observed. The mean occlusal force level after wearing the fitted mouth-protector was greater than before. Significant differences were found between with and without mouth protectors in soleus H-reflex. These data suggest that 1) stomatognathic system (especially corpus mandibular length) should be considered in bone mineral density ; 2) the isometric muscle strength would be increased by biting with the fitted mouth-protector.
