Research Abstract |
The aim of this study is to shed light on the process of the emigration in the origin areas of emigrants from the prefectures of western Japan which sent out more many emigrants to foreign countries than to Hokkaido in the Meiji era. I have collected and analized the individual data of the emigrants to Hokkaido and abroad in the prefectures of Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Kagawa, Ehime, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto, etc. Then, I have compiled the database of individual emigrants to Hokkaido. I presented a part of this study on the reports and articles at the geographical society and forth, and I pointed out as follows. In this study, I could confirm that the origin areas of emigrants to abroad from the prefectures of werstern Japan were same or adjacent to those of emigrants to Hokkaido with a few exceptions of these prefectures. However, on the other hand, I explicated that the social class of the emigrants to Hokkaido was different to one of emigrants to abroad and that a part of surplus population in these prefectures was to be sent out as the emigrants to abroad under the strategy of emigration induction by the administration.
