Research Abstract

オーロラサブストーム開始に至る時系列、および関連して発生する地磁気変動(magnetic bay,Pi 2)は40年以上にわたって論争が続いてきた、磁気圏-電離圏結合系における大きな未解明問題であった。本研究では米国カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校(UCLA)のLyons教授を訪問し、NASAのTHEMIS衛星、地上全天カメラ網のデータを用い、オーロラ帯極側境界増光がsubstormの前兆現象となることを事例解析と統計解析から明らかにした。また、SuperDARNレーダーによる電離圏プラズマ流の同時観測との比較の結果、オーロラ帯極側境界増光に先行して極冠域の赤道側向きプラズマ流が増大することが確かめられた。さらに、Resolute Bayに設置されている大気光観測データとの同時観測を調べてみると、昼側電離圏から経度方向に局在した高密度プラズマが視野内に流れてきて、磁極付近を通過して極側オーロラ帯境界に到達した。そしてその直後にオーロラ帯極側境界増光が発生した。これらの結果は、開いた磁力線上を局在した速いプラズマ流がopen-closed境界に向けて伝搬し、それがオーロラ帯極側境界増光およびそれに引き続く南北オーロラ(オーロラ帯の赤道向きプラズマ流)に接続することを示している。
さらにオーロラと地磁気変動との比較をしたところ、オーロラオンセットの開始とオーロラ帯のbay変化はほぼ同時であるが、その変動はその後のものと比べて数分の一程度と小さい。その数分後にさらなるオーロラの増光が起き、高緯度側に拡大していく。その過程には1-2分周期でオーロラの増光が繰り返し起きていた。このタイミングはオーロラ帯のbayの増強、中低緯度でのbayとPi 2の開始と対応していた。これまではこれらの時系列には数分程度の任意性があったが、本研究における高解像度のオーロラ観測により、その順序が明らかになった。
