We conducted our research and collected historical material according to a three-year plan from 1998 to 2000.
In the first year, three co-researchers at Beijing University were invited to collect material related to the history of international interchtange in the Hokuriku regions of Niigata and Toyama. They also made a study tour to see the present state of the infrastructure. In the second year, researchers from Niigata University visited China to collect related material and to observe the cities of Dalian, Shenyang, and Beijing. This year, which is the third year of the plan, each researcher catalogued and analyzed the data relating to their specific tasks.
We began our research with a historical analysis of the transportation routes across the Sea of Japan. We obtained the following results :
1. There were three major routes : Kobe-Dalian, Kitakyushu-Pusan, Niigata/Tsuruga-Chongjin/Najin. The distribution of trade in these ports was of the ratio 7 : 2 : 1. Thus, the Sea of Japan r
oute was no more than an alternative route during the war period. The primary reason for this lay in the Chinese hinterlands. In China, products from the north-east region were gradually concentrated in Dalian, becatuse the government found it politically advantageous to lower the distribution costs for this port.
2. Under these circumstances, the Dalian Shipping Comapany in Niigata periodicalized the sea-lane across the Sea of Japan in 1933, and planned for trade promotion between Dalian and Niigata. However, the prefectures on the Sea of Japan coast did not co-operate in the promotion, so none of them was able to become a port of any substantial size.
3. Niisata Prefecture currently maintains prefectural economic offices in Dalian and in Seol, and regards Dalian as an important city, but the current situation is almost the same as that before the war.
The results from the past three years' research was published as a report entitled "The Interchanges across the Sea of Japan in the Modern Period by Examining the Dalian-Niigata Trades" Some of our project members also published research papers in the eighth volume of "The North East Asia Studies Annual Report" in March, 2001. The biggest achievement of this project is a report entitled "The Social Changes in the Regions on the Sea of Japan Rini" by the chief researcher, YOSHII Kenichi. Less
