The S phase of M_4N type nitride found from the research of the processing of the plasma nitriding of the stainless steels in 1986 has been being researched internationally from the possession of the character of a high corrosion resistance and high hardness.
To correct current results of the research of S phase, to collect latest research information on S phase and to hold an international seminar in Kansai University, to make the result public widely, and to contribute to pubic development of the 21^<st> century, this research was done as The Birmingham University in Britain which was the agreement university of Kansai University and an intercollegiate cooperation research.
2.Document investigation on S phase :
Since the S phase generates when stainless steels are chiefly in ion-nitriding. Document investigation was done on[Metals Abstracts]as the key words for[Ion Nitriding]and [Austenitic Stainless Steel]from 1977 to 2000. 157 papers(only English)were resulted as the theses related to the above-mentioned. They were contributed to following SS2000 Proceedings.(publication from The Institute of Materials)
3.Research Investigation on S phase :
The under-mentioned results was announced to SS2000, and each thesis was contributed to Proceedings SS2000.
1) Effect of Mechanical Pre-Treatment on the Formation of S phase in Plasma Nitrided 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel.
2) "S" phase formation of Some Austenitic Stainless Steels by Ion-Nitriding.
3) Nitriding of Stainless Steel Using High Power YAG laser.
4. Domestic and International seminar on SS2000 :
There were the participates of 61 persons(47 country persons and 14 foreigner), and abstracts papers of 25(9 country and 24 foreign countries)on this seminar. Moreover, a domestic seminar on concerning fundamental and application of S phase was held in Kansai University on 24 September 1999. There were four lectures and 70 participants.
